OK, so your big day is approaching. My suggestion is to have a few trial runs with your makeup so that on the big day you are not surprised with some kind of ninja allergy! No bride needs a surprise break out all over her face hours before she is to have pictures of the most important day of her life!
Know what products you are going to be using, know who your makeup artist is going to be, if you choose to hire one or know of a friend, or even doing it yourself. I cannot stress how important it is to know how the products you are going to be using are going to affect your skin. I have very sensitive skin, so I know that before I go to a makeover session to ask what products are going to be used.
As I mentioned above, it is good to have a trial run and I suggest at least a couple of trial runs with how you want your makeup to look like. A good start is how to prep your face for makeup application. I have 5 steps blow to help you get that beautiful canvas ready for its masterpiece!
Step 1 Cleanse that face!
Yes, it has to be said. Cleansing your face with products specially formulated for your type of skin and specifically for the face. Choosing the right cleansers is I would say THE most important step. If you have sensitive skin, like me, stay away from cleansers those strong harsh ingredients such as hydroxyl or glycolic acids, such ingredients may cause redness and irritation. Most importantly, read the labels and know what skin type you are and buy for your skin type.
One thing that is commonly overlooked is pH balance products. I know you never expected a chemistry lesson for doing makeup, did you? It is actually important to understand a little biology to achieve the best skin care regime for keeping that canvas perfect for your masterpiece! The basic is pH stands for “potential hydrogen” and it is used to describe the acid alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 being the most acidic and 14 the most alkaline. Why is this important? The health of your skin and your body is linked to this, yes, you need to try to keep a healthy balance between acidity and alkalinity in your body. Step 2 Exfoliate your face and Neck
Yes, I said it, you exfoliate your neck as well, and that means front and back! Nobody wants dead skin cells hanging around clumping up your makeup, especially on the big day with your closest friends and family, and don’t forget that pesky photographer capturing every moment of your day, and in HD! Zoom in on them pores!
While you are in your trial run, and I would start this routine probably a good 6 months before, I’ve mentioned having a few trial runs before, this repetition is to stress how important an overall good skincare routine is anyway, not just for your big day, although that is THE most important day, next to saying Yes of course !
Look for a nice gentle daily exfoliater scrub with small granules. Try and stay away from ingredients that are rough and irregular, so circular scrubs are the key; the rougher ingredients may damage your skin. Do not forget your neck, we have kissable lips and cheeks and we must not forget a nice smooth kissable neck! Rawr!
One thing I have found that I cannot live without is an exfoliater brush; I picked up this fabulous Ultimate Dual Exfoliating Face Brush at Sephora.
Step 3 Apply a Serum
Not a lot of women know of serum, I know I hadn’t used it until recently, and let me tell you. I had no idea what I was missing. Serum is used before moisturizer to help infuse essential vitamins and minerals into your skin; the best time to apply serum is after exfoliation. Typically I exfoliate after a shower, I have already cleaned my body and taking the extra time to concentrate on my face is a good skin care practice. It only adds a few extra minutes to your regular routine, but it is the best extra time you can spend. Your face, like yourself, deserves nothing but the best!
Look for a serum that will benefit your type of skin, vitamin C for smoothing, or herbs that firm and hydrate the skin to help minimize aging. A good quality serum can be purchased from Boscia for $48 at www.boscialskincare.com.
Step 4 Hydrate your Skin
This step is my favorite. I love the way my face feels after I’ve applied my moisturizer. This is another one of those products that I recommend that you spend a little more money to buy a high-end moisturizer. Personally I use MAC Complete Comfort Cream ; a little goes a long way, and the best pay to apply your moisturizer is to press it in, remember to keep your fingers clean. If you have a few extra bucks, I have the MAC 187 foundation brush that I use to apply my moisturizer. Yes, I have two of them brushes in my makeup bag!
Step 5 Prime your Canvas
The ultimate secret weapon that all the professional makeup artists have in their toolbox, face primer! Yes, Face Primer is one of those secret weapons that I feel every girl should know about. The face primer goes on before the foundation and after the above steps has been completed. This editor’s favorite face primer; Pixi Cosmetics Flawless & Poreless. This is an absolute fantastic face primer. It is reasonably priced and it gives me a good flawless look, I get quite a few more compliments on my makeup on days I have used this product!
So, here I have listed the 5 basic steps to prepare your face for your big day! Your wedding guests will be talking about how fabulous you look for weeks to come after you have made your appearance and just think of how fantastic you will be in all your photographs, your great-grandchildren will be begging you to share your secret.
